The aim of Baltimore Sea Safari is to introduce our boat trip passengers to the outstanding beauty of the West Cork coastline, while looking out for the wildlife that may be in the area. The waters off Baltimore offer the perfect environment to see whales, dolphins, porpoise, basking shark, seals and a wide variety of seabirds. We operate in an area of exceptional unspoiled natural beauty within Carbery Hundred Isles, Roaringwater Bay (which is a designated Special Area of A minke whale approaches close to Baltimore Sea Safari during a whale watching boat tripConservation SAC) and the Ilen River, which are home to the most diverse range of sea and bird life to be seen anywhere in Ireland. During our boat trips we provide an informative commentary on the sights of interest, and on the fascinating history of the area and its wildlife.

We collect data on the wildlife that we encounter during all of our boat trips. We log times, species seen, numbers seen, area description, gps positions, behavioral characteristics and we also take photos for photo ID purposes when ever possible. This data is shared with other agencies, groups and universities to help develop a better understanding of the whales, dolphins, porpoise, basking sharks, seals, ocean sunfish and other wildlife that frequent the waters around the West Cork coastline.
We also have an onboard Hydrophone for listening to the sounds of the sea.

This is our most popular trip, and is a thrilling fun packedcoastal sightseeing tour with whale, dolphin, seal and wildlife watching. We don’t just whiz through the sea, we travel along the coastline so that passengers can enjoy close-up views of the many beautiful islands, sheer cliffs, lighthouses, signal towers, beacons, castles, secluded bays and inlets, and the tranquil coastal villages.

We aim to give the passengers on our boat trips an opportunity to view a myriad of sea-life that occupies the waters and the shorelines of the West Cork coastline.

Baltimore Sea Safari in a cave in West CorkWe visit seal colonies on all of our boat trips, and the shallow draft and high maneuverability of unique boat allows us to take passengers into sea caves previously used by smugglers and pirates. As well as the whales, dolphins, basking sharks and seals that we regularly see from our Baltimore Sea Safari boat trips, passengers should also keep a lookout for jellyfish, ocean sunfish (Mola Mola), sea turtles and on rare occasions otters.

A bottlenose dolphin called Clett plays near Sherkin Island in West CorkThis is a shorter version of our Sea Safari trip; and it is an excellent way to get out on the water for a taster of what the waters and coastline around Baltimore has to offer. Take in the beautiful West Cork scenery and splendid views, whether we take you on a tranquil journey along the Ilen river; through Roaringwater Bay and past Jeremy Iron’s Kilcoe Castle, or head offshore past Sherkin Island and Baltimore Beacon to visit the magical Kedge Island, with its seal colony. Each route that we may take is unique with many different sights and wildlife to be seen. We will divert our boat trip to encounter any fresh whale, dolphin or wildlife sightings that may be in the area.

Experience the thrill of a fast boat ride, while enjoying the main sights of Baltimore village and harbour from a different viewpoint. The boat trip will take you past the Lifeboat Station, the famous Baltimore Beacon, Sherkin Island and up into the Ilen river, where we visit a colony of Common seals. You will get a great opportunity to view and photograph the seals as we drift slowly past, and see their true intuitiveness as they study us from the shore or as they swim close-by in the water. If the tide is right we will pass through the spectacular Hacketts Creek. You can admire the panoramic views of Baltimore village and Spain tower as we push forward the throttle and return to the pier.

We have a good working relationship with other boat operators, fishermen and ferry operators in the area, and with a group sharing of information on fresh wildlife sightings, the chances of seeing these amazing creatures is greatly increased.

We operate responsible wildlife watching boat trips, and we try to limit any disturbance to the wildlife that we encounter during our boat trips to a minimum.
